TEXAN WINS RISTOW PRIZE

Thomas A. Weiss, a PhD. student at the University of Texas, Arlington, is the winner of the 2012 Ristow Prize for his essay, “MapAnalyst and Geographic Information Systems: Keys to Unlocking New Paths of Research in the History of Cartography.” Mr. Weiss’s paper will appear in a forthcoming issue of The Portolan, the journal of the Washington Map Society. Honorable Mention has been given to Erin Maglaque, a D.Phil. candidate at Oxford University in England. Her paper is “Writing Sentences with Toponyms: Archiving and Narrating the Colonia in the Cornaro Atlas.”

The 2013 Ristow Prize competition is now open, and undergraduate, graduate, and first-year postdoctoral students of any nationality are eligible to compete. Papers must be in English, not exceeding 7500 words, and should be submitted by June 1, 2013, to Evelyn Edson, 268 Springtree Lane, Scottsville, VA 24590, U.S.A. Appropriate illustrations are encouraged. The winning essay will receive a cash prize of $1000 and will be published in The Portolan, the journal of the Washington Map Society. The prize, named in honor of the late Dr. Walter W. Ristow, is sponsored by the Washington Map Society of Washington, D. C.
