Waterloo Texas

Postby huseman » Wed Jun 30, 2010 9:42 am

Has anyone seen a late 1830s map with the village or settlement of "Waterloo" on the Colorado River where Austin is today? I just received a query on this from Betje Klier. On reflection, I have long heard that Austin was called Waterloo but I do not recall seeing it on a map. According to the Handbook of Texas, the name was in effect between 1838 and 1839.

Hello Ben,

I saw your query yesterday, so I examined my Texas and Mexico maps. Unfortunately, I found no mention on any of my maps for a "Waterloo" settlement on the Colorado River. But thanks for the query since it gave me an opportunity to re-visit some of my stored but neglected maps. Hope you are having a great summer. See you in the fall for the TMS meeting.
