I wanted to make Texas Map Society members aware of an upcoming auction on Dec. 5 that includes many important maps and an accompanying offer from the Arader Galleries that could benefit the TMS. I know some of our members are active map collectors and participate in auctions around the world. If you are a TMS member and if you are planning to participate in the auction below then please (pretty please!) read the blurb below. Thanks. Gerald Saxon, Vice President, TMS
On December 5, 2012, Guernsey's Auction Company will be conducting an auction at Arader Galleries, 1016 Madison Avenue in New York. As many of you know, Graham Arader has had a gallery in Houston for over thirty years, and Mike Foley from the gallery is a member of the Texas Map Society.
Graham Arader has extended the following offer to TMS members: For each purchase made by a member of TMS, Arader will give ten percent of the hammer price to the TMS as an unrestricted gift. All the bidder has to do is designate the TMS as the recipient of this gift.
Here is a link to the online catalog. A hard copy is available on request from Mike Foley at (917) 435-5964.

Lots 139-190 are the maps, atlases and globes. The selection of maps is built around Sy Schwartz's book The Mapping of America. Lot 169 is the famous John Mitchell Map of c. 1773. Lot 173 is Humboldt's important map of the American Southwest and Mexico. Lot 177 is the Disturnell map of Mexico, famed as being incorporated into the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Lot 175 is the Melish map, which was the first to juxtapose the discoveries of Lewis and Clark, Zebulon Pike, Stephen Long, Andrew Ellicot and Thomas Nutall. And there are many more maps, as well as atlases by the giants of Dutch cartography and a selection of globes.
